Keeping a
pipe clean is the first line of defense against a poor or
wet-smoking pipe. However, a recent estate acquisition or
family heirloom may well be in need of a serious overhaul.
A refurbishing treatment will clean the inside for your
smoking pleasure, and the outside for your viewing
pleasure. Matching a stain or re-staining is also done to
make the finished product look like new. All care possible
is taken to preserve briar and stem stamping. One note of
interest on pipes that have been heavily caked: from my
experience, I have found that estate pipes need to be
aggressively reamed. Too much old cake will leave the pipe
tasting of the previously smoked tobacco blend. However,
if the pipe is one of your normal rotation, let me know
and I'll ream it accordingly.
I offer three
levels of refurbishing. A standard ream/clean/buff
involves reaming and honing the tobacco chamber, cleaning
the draft hole, mortise, and stem interior. On the
outside, I remove old grime, oils, and oxidation. A final
buff with pure carnauba wax leaves the pipe sparkling like
new and smoking great.
A
semi-refinish also addresses bowl dings so that their
appearance is not so noticeable. Appropriate stain
matching is performed as necessary.
A full
refinish does it all; ream/clean/buff, total briar and
stem restoration including bite mark reduction. All
efforts are made to return the pipe to nearly original
condition.
