All repair work is done as if each
pipe were my own. Stem tenons are lathe-turned for
accuracy. Stem/shank matching is performed with minimal
changes to the original joint shape. All stampings are
protected throughout the process. Stain matching and bowl
top straightening are also done with respect for the
original product.
Quite a few vintage pipes have stem
styles that are unique, but not optimized for smoking
enjoyment. Why not consider having a spare stem made for
your prize smoker? The new stem will be engineered for
open draw and minimum turbulence. The original can then be
saved to preserve the collectible value of the pipe.
If you want to transform a
poor-smoking pipe into the crown jewel of your rotation,
try a "Blueprint". Consistent draft hole
diameter from bowl to stem, and mortise to tenon matching
can transform a pipe's smoking characteristics. This
process also includes converting a 9mm filter pipe to 4mm
specs. Recently,
I have successfully adapted the Blueprint process to
Meerschaum pipes with straight pipes showing tremendous
improvement. Imagine: a Meer that doesn't smoke wet!
I have developed two new, viable
alternatives to banding when a pipe has a cracked shank.
The Bulletproof shank repair (above) utilizes a Delrin
sleeve epoxied into the mortise. A 4mm thinwall stainless
steel tube is then epoxied into the stem, creating a new
tenon. Only the stainless steel tubing contacts the smoke
channel. The cracked area is now much stronger than it
ever was, with no unsightly band to mar the pipe's
original appearance. This technique was displayed at the
2003 Chicago Pipe Show, and was well received by smokers
and pipemakers alike. I also have exotic woods, deer
antler, and synthetic ivory & horn for ring and
ferrule decoration.
My Bamboo conversion applies a
different solution to the same problem. Let's say you've
been wanting a new bamboo shank pipe, but can't justify
the $200.00 and up prices. For $100.00 to $125.00, I will
convert your existing pipe into a bamboo shank pipe with a
new, custom stem. I use the same type of bamboo, stainless
steel tubing, and German ebonite that the top carvers do.
Now, you will have a new bamboo pipe with a bowl that is
already broken in to your satisfaction...at a more
affordable price. The picture shows a Comoy Grand Slam
conversion.
